André Franquin

André FranquinAndré Franquin, the creator of Gaston, was a very famous Belgian drawer. Next to Gaston he also made the series Spirou and Fantasio and the adventures of the Marsupilami.
André Franquin was born on January 3rd 1924 in Brussels. In 1946 he took over the series Spirou, which existed since 1938 and was carried on by different drawers like Jijé or Jidéhem. The Marsupilami, Spirou, Duke Champignac and Fantasio Spirou became really successful, and Franquin invented many new characters, e.g. Fantasio, the Marsupilami, Duke Champignac, Zantafio or the Zorglub.
In 1969 he passed the Spirou series to other drawers, to have more time for his new series Gaston and Marsupilami.
Franquin has been honoured for his comics with lots of awards.
On January 5th André Franquin died in South Africa at the age of 73 years.
